For sale is a pair of exceptionally rare factory-matched pair of Tim Shaw's iconic original 'Dirty Fingers' hot PAF pickups.
Following a perceived decline in popularity circa late 1970s, Gibson brought in the legendary Tim Shaw to try and restore their guitars' sound back to the golden years of the 50s-60s. For this process, Tim quite literally took apart a few sets of genuine PAFs and recreated the design in what is now know as the 'Tim Shaw PAF' - the closest thing to the real deal.
Based on his findings, Tim also engineered a 'hotter' iteration of the PAF, increasing output with the use of 3 ceramic magnets to increase output while retaining clarity - and thus the 'Dirty Fingers' humbucker was born.
This is one of the earliest examples I have personally seen and does not feature the 'Dirty Fingers' lettering to the facade - an addition which would come later. This particular set is rare still, featuring double white bobbins on either pickup (with black being the more common iteration. The result is a hot set of double white humbuckers which won't look out of place on a vintage, nor modern guitar.
These were taken from a 1982 Flying V, where they had spent their entire life without disturbance or modification. As such, this is a set of wholly unmolested pickups with their original windings and full lead length, etc.
Both backs are stamped with concurrent '82 serials, while also featuring their patent number impressed to the casing and of course 4x gold/brass screws each (distinguishing them from a 'regular' Tim Shaw PAF).
Both output excellently, with no degradation or issues at all.
Some minor age-related tarnishing, though as above they have been sat untouched in the guitar they were paired with since leaving the factory in 1982.
A great opportunity to pick up some very rare pickups from Gibson's 'renaissance' period, second only to a 'regular' Tim Shaw PAF - that only being second to an original PAF. They have a very distinctive character - being inherently familiar and PAF-like at their core, but with a lot more leeway for driving / pushing the sound of whichever guitar they're homed in.
