Quite an oddball guitar, here.

The 'Custom' moniker was a brand applied to these Greco-made guitars, assumably for catalogue/in-house brands. It shares all the hallmarks of a 70s Greco, including the distinctive truss rod cover shape, but with a pearloid 'Custom' logo to the headstock.

This model seems to be their reworking of both an LP Junior and custom, combing the usual lone Dogear shape with a 2x pickup configuration. It peculiarly features a rather nicely selected tight-grained mahogany pancake body, with an accurate Cherry stain.

The result is a rather sweet sounding guitar. This one has most certainly been through the wars and I can't find another example.

Specs:

  • Country of origin: Japan (Greco-made)
  • Date of manufacture: Circa 1970s
  • Cherry Red finish
  • 70s 'pancake' mahogany body
  • Mahogany bolt on neck
  • Dark rosewood fretboard with dot inlays
  • 2x Dogear-style single coil pickups

Condition:

As above, this guitar has seen a lot of action. Plenty of dings, marks and finish wear, as well as tarnishing to the hardware. It is however, free of breaks and largely original. There is a portion to the back, assumably a previous large gouge, crudely refinished by the previous owner. It seems they also had trouble getting the neck off at some point, with wear to the top left screw area as pictured. It is however structurally solid, of excellent build quality and plays/sounds great with a comfortable low action. Frets are in decent condition and the real dark rosewood board really pops. The pickups are of course Greco's attempt at a P90 and to my ear, sound like a rich, warm single coil with just a little bite, as they should be.

Modifications/repairs:

Refinished area to back of body (pictured).

Accessories:

None.
