A beautiful Martin model D-28 dreadnought, dating from 1970.
A fantastic vintage guitar for the money, about half the price of a 1969 model owing to Martin changing the specs somewhat this year, introducing East Indian Rosewood back and sides in favour of Brazilian Rosewood.
I believe the same year also saw the introduction of the 'big' bridge and plate, which this one does feature (this is because they didn't intonate quite as well as the 'small' bridge plates). This one however plays nicely, with a sweet sound and classic D-28 tone. The intonation may be characteristically off by a couple of Hz at the 12th fret - but not particularly noticeably so (to my ear, anyway). Part of the charm of these models, I guess!
Free of breaks, this one has benefited from a recent professional neck reset (a common need with these models - they had no truss rod). As a result, the neck angle is superb and the action is comfortably low, with plenty of room left on the saddle.
This one also comes with its original blue-lined hard case - quite desirable in its own right.
Specs:
- Country of origin: USA
- Year of manufacture: 1970
- Natural finish
- Spruce top
- Ebony fingerboard
- Factory Grover tuners
- Indian Rosewood sides
- 2 piece Indian Rosewood back
- Under saddle pickup (1/4 input at strap button area)

Condition:
For a 55 year old guitar, it has survived very well and is free of any breaks. There are some minor dings to the top, body and neck - though nothing serious or noteworthy for a guitar of this age. All original parts including factory Grover stamped tuners. Finish is original and has beautifully ambered, as old Martins do, with beautiful subtle lacquer checking throughout.
Modifications/repairs:
Fairly recent professional neck reset (much needed). Professionally installed under saddle pickup (unsure of brand, but it sounds nice) with 1/4 output to strap button area. One very well filled hole to the top side from a previous strap button (pictured). Bridge has had some minor splits between the pins filled, done with near-invisible work.
Accessories:
Original blue-lined hard case.
A classic Martin workhorse at a fraction of the price of a model made just a year prior!
