Super rare Vox Phantom IV model bass guitar, made in Italy (1967).

A super rare Vox bass, only in production from 1967-68. This one featured the 'Wyman' neck - super skinny, snooker cue profile! One of these (but not this exact guitar) can be seen being played at the Stones' 'Rock and Roll Circus' special.

This one I'm deeming a 'player's' guitar, owing to being fairly worn and heavily checked Italian thick poly finish (a trait shared with Eko guitars). It's also seen some compression damage to one of the pots - this has been packed with glue to solidify said area and it's solid, plus the damage is covered by the knob itself. Despite this, it's playing well and sounds very cool.

Specs:

  • Country of origin: Italy
  • Year of manufacture: 1967
  • Hollow violin body
  • Sunburst finish
  • Super slim 'Wyman' neck profile
  • Built in distortion / treble boost circuit, powered by 9v battery (accessed at back)
  • Maple neck with rosewood fingerboard

Condition:

As above, it's a player's guitar owing to heavy checking, numerous dings and a repaired compressed pot area. It is however playing well and sounds great - super comfy neck and instant 60s hollow body tones. Some knobs have cracks (pictured), but all are present. It's currently strung with round wounds, but is crying out for a set of flats! The fuzz switch is surprisingly good and would make for a cool pedal in its own right! Back panel cover missing - it would have originally had a Gretsch-type pleather 'push on' cover. Heavy checking / lacquer cracks to neck pocket, but no breaks in that regard.

Modifications/repairs:

Some replaced screws, missing pickguard and back cover. Repaired compressed pot area (solid) and G tuner disconnected.

Accessories:

None.
