A beautiful Hofner 182 E1 'Professional' bass, dating from circa 1963.
These models were produced by Hofner and sold at Selmer as an economical competitor for Fender's popular Precision Bass. They came in two variants, the E1 and E2 models - featuring 1 and 2 pickups respectively. This model is the former, being an E1 single pickup bass and uncommonly features the 'panel' style tone controls with a bass/treble cut - a feature that was removed that year.
It also comes complete with its equally rare shop-supplied fitted Selmer tweed case, which is a rarity in its own right.
In excellent and original condition, with just a few marks owing to light playing over the many decades. The bass came paired with a set of vintage flatwounds, which I have left on as they really complement its vintage tone. Its pickup is the same as those featured on various incarnations of Paul McCartney's iconic 'Violin' basses - though importantly, has a distinct tone owing to its solid body.
Plays well with a straight, comfortable neck and a comfortable action. Do not be fooled by the lone pickup - this bass is fantastically versatile owing to the tone/treble cuts. It can easily handle thumping bass tones and can equally be dialled in for woody, rubbery 60s sounds.
Frets in good condition, electronics fully functional and original. Sounds and plays great, truss rod accessible via base of neck (working).
The case fits the guitar well and is functional, and though it has been naturally rather worn over the years - it's done its job in keeping this handsome bass safe over the years.
A lesser-known vintage classic bass produced by premier 60s guitar builders, Hofner.
