A very rare Japanese valve amp dating from circa late 60s/early 70s - the Royal Show Man 103.
Having done some research, it transpires that these amps were actually produced by Elk, re-badged 'Royal' - specifically, I believe this is identical to an Elk EB-101 (single speaker) 'Stage Man' circuit, though in the housing of an Elk EB-105 'Guitar Man' (same cabinet shape). This is the resulting model. They're stamped as 60w, though I've seen them listed as 45w - and they are listed as 45w in the 60s Elk catalogue.
A really nice amp in its own right and pretty clean/original for its age. It has just come back from Coopersonic (the best in the business) who gave it a full service with the following notes:
"Preamp valves tested OK, one was the wrong type so the right type fitted. Output valves were 7189s which are an EL84 equivalent, but these not up to par so some used EL84s fitted. A little unusual in that this is a fixed bias design rather than the cathode biasing usually seen on amps with a pair of EL84s. This has actually worked to our advantage... Tremolo was not working; this is quite common as the oscillator capacitors need to be right and when the spec drifts off with age it stops oscillating. Hard to get at these as they are mounted under the tagboard but with a little effort they have been replaced. That done and the tremolo was quite unusable, with massive thumping even at moderate depth settings. Luckily though, as this is a fixed bias design, it was relatively easy to change the tremolo to a bias-varying circuit which works far better and without the thumping".
It is now playing wonderfully with a great sound. The reverb is decent - though on a small tank (this is how they were deserved). I'd envisioned putting a full-size tank in to fully 'Fender-ise' the amp, but I have left it as-is. 2 of the knobs were replaced by Coopersonic, as they had been long-missing. They're not identical, but a good match.
A great quality vintage Japanese valve amp, full-serviced with some cheeky period stylings.
