For sale is a very cool 1956 Gibson ES-175.
This started life as a single pickup model, which had been historically routed out for a second pickup in the middle position (why, I do not know).
Said hole has been plugged with a same thickness maple/poplar veneer and the entire top has been refinished in a thin coat of black nitro over the original Sunburst, meaning that it will naturally age over time to reveal the original sunburst. It retains its original finish to the back, sides and neck as pictured.
The neck pickup is the original 50s Gibson P90, with the lead pickup being a modern P90 reissue direct from Gibson, nicely balanced. A switch was added to accommodate this, as well as 2 extra pots, converting it to an ES-175D.
It would have left the factory as a second model, denoted by the small ‘2’ stamp to the back of the headstock. 
All other hardware comprises of quality repro parts: the pickguard is a repro sourced from the USA, the tuners are Kluson Deluxe repros, the tailpiece is a nice vintage trapeze and the bridge is a desirable mid-60s rosewood-mounted ABR-1.
It features a lovely thick ‘56 neck profile, naturally with a wide nut. There is some discolouration / marks to the back of the neck - though it is free of breaks and retains its original finish. 
Comes with a period hard case (which looks to be an Ess & Ess), which is slightly too large for the guitar but suits it well. 
Plays nicely, with a great warm sound from the neck pickup and a snappy lead tone. It has evidently had a previous refret owing to the lack of binding nibs. 
A handsome guitar at a fraction of the price of an all-original model.
